Q: Can I telephone the companies on the list?
A: You can, but direct mail is far more effective. A recent survey showed that 87% of US importers surveyed said they preferred to be contacted by mail.
This database is designed to send sales letters to US importers by mail. In the letter you introduce yourself, describe what products or services you have to offer, and direct the importer to your web site. This technique, more than any other, is the best way to find new customers for your product or services.
Some companies have included their telephone number, e-mail address, web site address and fax number. This data is not updated as part of our annual update of the mailing addresses. Consequently some of the telephone and fax numbers on the database will have changed or have been disconnected.
Q: How many companies are there on the database? How many sectors are there?
A: For the answer to this question, please click here.
Q: What is the price of the CD?
Q: How up-to-date is the information in the database?
A: The mailing addresses on the database were last updated in November 2009, with an incremental update in June 2010. These mailing addresses are as up-to-date as we can possibly make them.
Telephone numbers, fax numbers, and e-mail addresses, and web site addresses are not included in our annual update of mailing addresses. Consequently some of this data on the database will have changed or have been disconnected.
Q: Do I get updates?
There are no scheduled updates of the database sent. However, if a letter you send by mail comes back because the address has changed, please let us know. We will contact that company, get the correct address, and then inform you of the updated address. Or we will inform you that we could not contact the company and that it has been taken off our database. This update guarantee includes mailing addresses only, not telephone numbers, fax numbers or e-mail addresses.
Q: How are the database and B2B web site list delivered to me?
A: They are on a CD and delivered to you by mail. Notify us if you have a fast internet connection and we can send the database by internet within one business day after we receive the order.
Q: Is the database easy to use?
A: Very easy. You click on the "find" button and the find page comes on the screen. Type in what you are looking for and press "enter". You can do multiple finds, for example all of the textile and gift importers in the states of New York and California.
Q: What different types of information does the database contain?
A: All entries have the company name, address, city, state, zip code, e-mail address (if available), buyer's name, telephone and fax number (if available), and products imported.
Q: What are the different ways I can pay for the database?
A: There are seven ways to pay. To see them please click here.
Q: Can I import the database into my existing database?
Yes. This file can be exported and reimported into whatever database you use, including Access and Excel.
Q: What are the restrictions on sending faxes?
A: YES !! You MUST get a company's permission before sending them a sales letter fax. You can do this by telephoning first. Sending a sales letter by fax without permission is a violation of the law. Please do not do it.
Q: Why doesn't every company on the database include an e-mail address?
A: Importers in the US do not like to receive e-mails trying to sell them something and do not like to include their e-mail address on databases. Sending e-mail sales messages is considered "cheap man's advertising" and is not nearly as effective as sending a sales letter by mail. US importers almost never order from a spam e-mail message they receive. When is the last time you gave an order from someone you do not know who sent you an e-mail? Probably never. And US importers do not give orders from e-mails either. In addition, e-mail addresses change frequently in order to avoid spam.
Q: Why doesn't every company on the database include a web site address?
A: Importers in the US generally do not like to receive e-mails trying to sell them something and do not like to include their web site address on databases.
Q: Why are the B2B web sites on your list the ones that I should use?
A: We spent three months contacting importers in the US and several other countries to see what B2B sites they preferred. Using the sites on our list will save you time and insure that you are using sites that are popular.
Q: I've never used a B2B web site to find and sell to importers before. Does your CD contain information on how to do it?
A: Yes. There is a special section on the best ways to use these sites. There are "do's" and "don'ts" . We asked importers how they like to do business over the internet and what they are looking for in exporters who offer their goods on these sites.
Q: What is the American Importers Association? What is your function?
The A I A is a think tank based in the USA. Our function is to bring exporters around the world together with importers and buying agents in the US.
